The magneto-optical trap system is a precise experimental apparatus that utilizes the synergistic effect of three pairs of mutually perpendicular, circularly polarized, red-detuned laser beams and a pair of counter-Helmholtz coils to generate a gradient magnetic field. Through the Doppler cooling effect and the Zeeman effect, a damped harmonic potential trap is formed in space, thereby cooling and trapping neutral atoms near the magnetic field zero point (i.e., the center where the beams intersect). Its typical operating temperature can be as low as sub-milliKelvin to microKelvin levels.
